Welcome to Minnesota – Here’s an April Blizzard!

Minnesota has been making quite the headlines in the news lately! Naturally, due to our state’s inability to decide on a season, is anyone really surprised about this mid-April blizzard? In the past 48 hours, we have experienced: snow, whiteout conditions, thundersnow, rain, sleet, thundersleet, severe winter storm warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, blizzard warnings, hail, 50-60 mph winds, and dust from Texas. DUST. FROM. TEXAS. Our normally white snow is riddled with brown swirls of Texan dust because of just how strong the winds have been during this winter storm!

Snow globe territory.

It’s currently snowing, with snowflakes about a half inch in diameter, and it feels like we’re living in a snow globe. People are walking outside with umbrellas while wearing winter coats and rain boots – ugh, it’s sometimes hard to dress for the weather! Because apparently, only in Minnesota can the statewide tornado drill be canceled due to a blizzard during a flood. You can’t even make this stuff up.

Sometimes, we get the inkling that perhaps Mother Nature is just sitting in the clouds, with gorgeous spring flowers as bait on a fishing rod, dangling it in front of our faces while saying, “Ooooooo, so close, Minnesota. So. Close. You almost got it!” It was 70 degrees on Monday, so understandably, we’re basically just 100% over winter. Also, because of the insane amounts of snow that fell from January – March, a lot of our state is experiencing angry flooding… and once this snow melts, flooding could be even worse! Come next Monday, we’ll be back in the 50s and 60s.

So, why do we live here?

It’s rather affordable to live in Minnesota. We have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, with nearly twenty Fortune 500 company headquarters anchored here. There’s plenty of things to do for entertainment and our arts scene is incredible.

Minnesota has a friendly demeanor and natural beauty year-round. There’s a festival or fair for just about everything – from Irish Fest to the State Fair to car shows – you’ll find that Minnesotans really just love having a reason to celebrate something, because we’re a generally happy population.

We’re becoming a culinary destination. We are home to the Juicy Lucy, Honeycrisp apples, tater tot hotdish, and cheese curds. We’re also home to the first-ever vegan butcher in the country: The Herbivorous Butcher. And, Minnesota is, of course, known for Prince. Eat your way down University Avenue in St. Paul or discover for yourself the greatness that is Eat Street in Minneapolis!

Despite our insane winters, our state is actually a wonderfully wholesome place to live and raise a family. We have a sense of community here and there’s always something to do, no matter the season!
