Top 12 Things to do in the Minnesota Winter

Minnesota is known for its harsh and brutal winters, but that’s what gives us Minnesotans our tough skin. Because there are so many fun outdoor and indoor activities that are available to us, here are the top 12 things to do in the Twin Cities in the winter!

Skiing or Snowboarding

Afton Alps, Buck Hill, and Hyland Hills are just a couple of places you can go skiing or snowboarding and they are reasonably priced. Or, if you’re up for a little over an hour’s drive, head over to Dresser, Wisconsin, and carve out some powder at Trollhaugen.

Bowling

If you’re in the mood to bowl a few frames, there are quite a few fun bowling alleys around like Bryant Lake Bowl and Memory Lanes, or alternatively, if you feel like bowling old-school, RanHam Bowling is located in the basement of The Nook.

Mini Golf and Arcades

Because winter is practically half the year here, there is surely no shortage of mini golf and arcades and some concept-restaurants, like Dave and Buster’s and Victoria Burrow, are designed with entertainment in mind and is fun for kids and parents alike!

Ice Fishing

With all of the lakes in the Cities and all over the state, ice fishing is a really popular option for many. Layer up in warm clothes, grab your pole and auger and head out to one of our beautiful lakes for a day of fishing fun!

Ice Castles

Looking for magic? Between January 12 – February 28, 2019, you can go see ice caves, caverns, tunnels, frozen waterfalls, and glaciers that have been formed into archways at Ice Castles at The Commons in Excelsior.

Winter Carnival

Some could say this is the winter version of the Great Minnesotan Get Together. Featuring snow and ice sculptures, a parade through downtown St. Paul, and yummy Minnesotan foods, there is something for everyone to enjoy here.

Ice Skating

We have so many places you can go ice skating, whether it’s at an arena, a rink, or the pond in your very own backyard. Grab your skates and head out for hours of fun!

Breweries

We have a lot of amazing breweries here in Minnesota, and for good reason: We make great craft beer! Check out Bad Weather, Bauhaus, Dangerous Man, and Surly, to name a few.

The Science Museum

Nestled on the bank of the Mississippi River, The Science Museum offers hours of fun for everyone in the family. We have excellent exhibitions that make a stop in St. Paul on their journey across the globe, and make sure to catch an Imax film!

Walk the Minneapolis Skyways

Downtown Minneapolis has an elaborate skyway system that allows you to travel from building to building without having to brave the cold weather outside. There’s also a skyway app that you can download so you won’t get lost in the maze of the Minneapolis skyways!

Frozen Minnehaha Falls

Minnehaha Falls is gorgeous 24/7 every day of the year. If you haven’t gone to the falls in the wintertime, make it one of your next stops! The waterfall freezes and it’s one of the most beautiful things to see here!

Mall of America

If you like shopping, dining out, and going on roller coasters, then Mall of America should be one of the next places you go to. With over 2,500,000 square feet of shopping and entertainment, you’ll be amazed with all of the attractions available.
