Fun area activity for this week – The Broadway play “Rent”

First released in 1996 , this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award – winning play returns to stage in a 20th anniversary touring production. The play is about seven struggling artists and what matters most at the end – love.

Price ranges are $30 to $146, and it is at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Minneapolis on Hennepin Avenue. This wonderful theatre was first built in 1921, and was one of the four area theatres restored in 1993.

My review…the stage was industrial, yet very creative, and it featured the musical band Players incorporated in the stage and visible to everyone. The first act was compelling and yet a little slow to develop with the lead men suffering from average voices. The second act took off like a rocket with amazing performances by Angel Schunard (Joshua Tavares) and Maureen Johnson (Kelsee Sweigard). Tear jerking ending that resulted in a standing ovation.

Don’t miss it…ends this weekend!
