El Nino has formed and the public and Federal forecasters expect a global weather powerhouse. There is a 63% chance of a historic El Nino event. This will happen between November of this year into January of next year.

Why?

• Global Effects: The warming of the Pacific Ocean is expected to be the engine for severe weather globally, bringing catastrophic floods to many regions and devastating droughts to others. This will ensure 2027 becoming the planet’s warmest year on record.
• United States Impacts: A strong El Niño favors wetter and cooler conditions across the southern U.S. (including California and the Southern Plains), and bringing warmer, drier weather to the northern tier, Pacific Northwest, Ohio Valley, and our region.
• Hurricane Season: El Niño will increase wind shear across the Atlantic and as a result we will have below-normal Atlantic hurricane season for 2026.

What will be the effect here in Minnesota?

El Niño will lead to a milder and drier winter season with reduced snowfall.

These super storms are caused by global warming and the planet’s reaction to climate change. Another example is when hurricanes hit the Gulf of Mexico where the water temperature is now 90 degrees and instead of decreasing the intensity of the hurricane the water temperatures increase it.

Humanity has created this monster, and it will not get any better until we take better care of the environment. Each one of us can have an influence and demand change from our leadership.
