Review of The Nook in Saint Paul

The Nook is in Saint Paul at 492 Hamline Ave S. It is right across from Cretin-Derham Hall High School. It is open daily from11am to 11pm. The website is https://www.crnook.com/. They do not take reservations.

They received a 4.6 on 4,153 google reviews and 4.5 on Facebook with 5,543 reviews.

This reminds me of a combination of a college pub, a greasy spoon and old-time bowling alley. It has a Ranham Bowling Center in the basement with about six alleys. It also has the Dollar Bar in the basement which needs to be seen to be appreciated.

The Nook in Saint Paul

The Nook in Saint PaulThe wait staff was very friendly and welcoming. She was very busy so getting the check did take some time but was there promptly to take drink orders and the meal was delivered hot and promptly.

Here is what we had to eat…

  • Black & Bleu Burger – This was outstanding. Blue cheese and fried onion on a wonderful bun and hamburger were just as I ordered it – medium rare. Fries are homemade and great, and the portion is generous. Priced at $15.25.

  • Lodge Burger – bacon, tomato, lettuce, cheddar cheese and chipotle mayo. Some call this a California burger. Also served with homemade fries…outstanding. Priced at $15.50.

The bathroom was in ill repair and the toilet was overflowing when I walked in. It also had not been deep cleaned in about a thousand years! The kitchen was dirty with food on the walls and the place has not been cleaned for a long time. The lower-level Dollar Bar bathroom looked like it was under construction and was disgusting even for dive bar status. I would close this restaurant down for awhile and do the repairs it needs and the cleaning that is required to serve people food. Bathrooms are so bad I do not know how the staff can have clean hands.

I give it 3.5 stars **** out of five. The food was excellent, the service was great, has a wonderful location but it was the most unclean eating establishment I have been to since I started doing restaurant reviews (many years worth)! It would have gotten 5 stars if properly maintained and cleaned to basic standards.
