Capital Grille Minneapolis is located on the Lasalle Plaza in downtown Minneapolis at 801 Hennepin Ave and open Monday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. First let’s discuss the walk coming up Hennepin Ave…there were police cars on both sides of the street with lights on for at least 4 blocks ( I saw 8 squad cars). Then when I walked in there was a police officer standing next to the hostess podium. This level of police presence might be needed but it was not pleasant and did not put one in a relaxing and joyous mood. Then we went to the bar to order a drink while we waited until it was time to be seated. Both male bartenders were unfriendly and somewhat unpleasant. It is never good when you feel like they are doing you a favor to wait on you. Capital Grille could use some personable charm behind the bar!
The interior is classy, and I like the booths. Not a big fan of their two person booths since the table gets so overcrowded but this time the four of us had a large booth. Our waiter had an abundance of personality and was very knowledgeable and entertaining.
The menu features a wonderful variety of foods, and they are known for their steaks, but I have found their fish/seafood excellent as well. Here is the dinner menu https://www.thecapitalgrille.com/menu/dinner/appetizers
What we had to eat…two of us had the steak and two had the fish
- Pan-seared Sea Bass– with Miso butter, shiitake mushroom and asparagus. Priced at $60.00. Both said it was excellent and they enjoyed it. Be aware the portion was small, and it was $60.00.
- Dry aged bone-in New York Strip – we both ordered the blue cheese toping, and it was so tasty. Priced at $74.00. One issue was that we both ordered it medium rare and both of us got medium/medium well. We didn’t have time to send it back so be careful how you order it and discuss your expectations with the waiter.
I give it 3.5 stars out of five, they had uncomfortable police presence inside and out, unfriendly bartenders, beautiful interior, great table service, lovely Sea Bass and overcooked Bone-in New York Strips.
