Effective Covid treatments

Effective Covid treatments.

Covid across Minnesota is dramatically down but has recently increased in sixteen states. Here are two antiviral treatments you can take whether you a vaccinated or not to reduce the symptoms and risk of a serious outcome.

Two Covid treatments

First is Pfizer’s Paxlovid and second is Merck’s molnupiravir. Please do not try to tough this virus out at home without taking one of these. Both antiviral pills need to be initiated within the first 3-5 days of the infection. After 5 days, they do not work. In addition to aiding a speedy recovery, the pills my help prevent “long Covid” symptoms.

Detailed info on each

Merck

Merck’s molnupiravir incorporates into viral RNA resulting in errors in viral genome leading to inhibition of replication, also known as viral error catastrophe or lethal viral mutagenesis. Indicated for the treatment of mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in adults with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 testing, and who are at substantial risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death. Fifty-two percent relative risk reduction in COVID-19 related hospitalization or death from any cause. Molnupiravir is administered as four 200mg tablets every 12 hours for five days. Molnupiravir is not authorized for use for longer than five consecutive days. No contraindications, however, not recommended in pregnancy or in patients less than 18 years of age secondary to impacts on bone and cartilage growth.

Pfizer

· Pfizer’s Paxlovid® nirmatrelvir, inhibits a SARS-CoV-2 protein to stop the virus from replicating, and ritonavir, which slows down nirmatrelvir’s breakdown to help it remain in the body for a longer period at higher concentrations. Indicated for the treatment of mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in adults and pediatric patients (12 years of age and older weighing at least forty kilograms or about eighty-eight pounds) with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 testing, and who are at substantial risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death. Eighty-eight percent relative risk reduction in COVID-19 related hospitalization or death from any cause. Paxlovid is administered as three tablets (two tablets of nirmatrelvir and one tablet of ritonavir) taken together orally twice daily for five days, for a total of thirty tablets. Paxlovid is not authorized for use for longer than five consecutive days.

Not every pharmacy carries the antiviral pills, but many do. You should have no problem finding them. Here is a website where you can search to find a pharmacy near you that carries the medication www.covid.gov.
