The History of Mendota Heights

Mendota Heights is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota https://www.mendota-heights.com/ .  Mendota Heights is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. It is a first-ring suburb. The city is 6.7 miles south of Saint Paul.

It began in 1699 when the French explorer Pierre Charles Le Sueur sailed past the bluffs. Him and his fellow traders began their fur trade on this area where the Minnesota and Mississippi met. The Dakota word of “mdo-te” or “meeting of the waters” is the origin of the name Mendota. Bought in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. By 1820’s a ferry operated across the Minnesota River connecting the city of Mendota to Fort Snelling. In 1851 the Dakota signed the Treaty of Mendota that opened the lands west of the Mississippi to settlement. In 1887 it was incorporated as a village.
