Lakeville is in Dakota County, Minnesota. It is part of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area that has 3.52 million residents.

Lakeville is the largest city in Dakota County and growing quickly as the result of lots of new construction. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the State of Minnesota. Lakeville is located about 20 miles south of both downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The Sioux ceded most of southern Minnesota in the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux in 1851. Lakeville became notable in 1910 when Marion Savage built the Dan Patch Railroad to his Antlers Amusement Park. The area later became a large mill facility. Lakeville was incorporated as a city in 1967.

My conclusion

To summarize, I have found Lakeville to be a popular city. You can commute to Minneapolis or St. Paul. Importantly, it has great amenities, wonderful shopping, many parks, trails & lakes, and wonderful schools. In short, I strongly suggest considering Lakeville if you are planning on moving to the Twin Cities of Minnesota.
