Best small town in Minnesota

In 2018 the WCCO viewer’s choice for best small town in Minnesota was Nisswa https://www.nisswa.com/. There are 740 small towns to pick from and they had to be less than 5,000 in population.

Nisswa features special events throughout the year like turtle racing, Nisswa City of the lights, farmers market, smoked rib Fridays, LPCF Memorial car show, Lakes Area Artists Annual show, Firefly Festival, Fifty Lakes Day fireworks, Artisans and Crafters market, Nashville in Nisswa, Nisswa Crazy days, and Nisswa Fall Festival & Smolin’ Hot BBQ challenge, and so much more!

General information

Located just north of Brainerd/Baxter and is in Crow Wing County. Was founded in 1800’s and became the “Smiley” stop off the railroad. You can still climb into an old rail car that is downtown. One of the best features is that Nisswa is on the Paul Bunyan Trail which is 115 miles long of paved pavement. It is wonderful for walking, biking, and snow mobile riding in the winter. It is the longest continuous paved rail trail in the entire United States.

Some fun spots to visit

  • Zaiser’s Gift Shop
  • Nisswa Totem Pole Boutique Marketplace
  • Near+North
  • Arbor Boutique
  • Turtle Town Books & Gifts
  • Main Street Ale House
  • Ganley’s Restaurants
  • Rafferty’s Pizza
  • Chocolate Ox

I love this small town and come there every month in the summer because our family cabin is just north. I agree with WCCO viewers that this is the best small town in Minnesota!
