What is the history of the capitol?
It all started with a log hotel in Saint Paul in 1849. For the first Minnesota Territory legislature meeting. But a fire broke out during a legislature session in 1881 and burnt it to the ground. The second capital completed construction in 1883 and was too small right away. The current capital is the work of Cass Gilbert. He was a local architect and only 35 years old. Construction started in 1896. It opened in 1905. It cost $4.5 million and was an ambitious undertaking for a state that was only 37 years old.
The capital just had a comprehensive renovation. The first since it opened in 1905 and finished in 2017. This renovation cost $310 million.

When can I see it?
Well first, it’s free. It has guided tours at the top of the hour, and they are 45 minutes long. Building hours is 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Then 10am to 3pm on Saturday. And 1pm to 4pm on Sundays.
What are the main attractions at the capitol?
Beautiful senate and House of Representatives cambers. The Minnesota Supreme Court courtroom. Marble throughout with skylights, historical glass and original furnishings. Sculptures, 60 priceless painting from 1905. Dramatic murals throughout the chambers. Extensive stencil work form 1905. The 3rd floor decorative ceiling is breathtaking. And so much more!

This one of those places to visit that you will always remember that moment. And I suggest this for anyone who wants to experience something very special. So much to see. It is one of the great destinations in all of Minnesota!
