Prior Lake is a city of 22,796 (2010 census) and 20 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis. It is seated next to Savage and Shakopee and in Scott county. You will find the city of Prior Lake surrounding the shores of Lower and Upper Prior Lake, the city also lies south of the Minnesota River in an area known as “South of the River”. Prior Lake and the Twin Cities and other suburbs make the sixteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Prior Lake is one of the oldest cities in the south metro area and was first incorporated as a village in 1891. The city’s modern rapid growth is due in part to the ease of access for commuters to the rest of the region and the upgraded State Highway 13 and the Bloomington Ferry Bridge.

There are 15 lakes within the City of Prior Lake. The namesake, Prior Lake is by far the largest at over 1,340 acres (combining Upper Prior Lake and Lower Prior Lake) and is ranked as one of the top 10 most popular recreational lakes in Minnesota. Spring Lake is also a popular recreational lake and is the second largest at about 590 acres. The lakes are part of who Prior Lake is – since all year long, residents and visitors alike enjoy the abundant recreational opportunities the lakes provide including fishing, swimming, boating, and wildlife viewing. Prior Lake features many recreational amenities including more than 55 parks on 1,000 acres, over 100 miles of trails and sidewalks and 14 lakes. The City of Prior Lake operates two swimming beaches on Prior Lake for the public to enjoy: Sand Point Beach and Watzl’s Point Beach. Each offers a sandy spot for recreation and has designated swim areas. The beaches typically are open Memorial Day through Labor Day, depending on the weather.

Generous golfing opportunities are found in the Prior Lake area with the Wild’s Golf Club, Legends Golf Club, Heritage Links Golf Club, Cleary Lake Golf Course and the Meadows at Mystic Lake Golf Course.

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) is located in Prior Lake and is the largest employer in the county. They offer their own array of opportunities to the public including restaurants, Playworks, Dakotah!, an Ice Center, two casinos and a hotel.

Public transportation is provided for the Prior Lake community to other municipalities and to downtown Minneapolis by way of the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA).

Prior Lake/Savage Area School District 719 – https://www.mnschools.com/school-finder/school-districts/prior-lake-savage-719/ – serves Prior Lake, Savage and surrounding townships. It is home to six elementary schools, one early childhood center; including Spanish Immersion kindergarten; a school for gifted learners in grades 3-5; two middle schools for grades 6-8; an Alternative Learning Program for students in grades 7-8; an Area Learning Center for students in grades 9-12; and one high school serving students in grades 9-12. There are also several private schools which include Aspen Academy K-3, Prior Lake Christian Academy (K-12), St. Michael’s Catholic School (K-8) and St. Paul’s Lutheran School (K-8).

The City of Prior Lake is within the Prior Lake-Savage School District. Prior Lake -Savage Area Schools (PLSAS) serve students in the communities of Prior Lake, Savage, Credit River Township, Spring Lake Township, Sand Creek Township, and Cedar Lake Township.
