This includes 32 parks, over 300 public dock sites, a state-of-the-art skate park, and the Dakota Rail Trail.

The Dakota Rail Trail is a hard surface biking and walking trail that extends 21 miles from Wayzata to Mayer providing breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Minnetonka along the way. Along with trails, parks, and docks Mound has plenty of other activities to offer families of Mound and visitors. Golf, Dog Days, Fishing and plenty of both winter and summer activities. The restoration of Lost Lake Channel has brought Lake Minnetonka to the doorstep of the redevelopment downtown, and the Mound Greenway and Pier make it possible to boat to Mound! How amazing is that?!

The city of Mound, Minnesota is serviced by Westonka Public School District # 277. Westonka Public School District is a highly rated, public school district located in Minnetrista, MN. It has 2,319 students in grades PreK through 12th with a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. State test scores, 83% of students are at least proficient in math and 82% in reading.

History

The Village of Mound was incorporated in 1912. Although, Mound was settled much earlier, in the 1850s. At this time Governor Ramsey was credited with naming Lake Minnetonka which meant “place spread over by water” in the Indian language. 

The city of Mound, Minnesota ultimately gained its name from the Indian mounds once found within the present city limits.  They were not built by the Dakota Indians, rather by Indians between 300 BC and 100 AD. 

In earlier times, the city of Mound, Minnesota was known as Mound City.  An active business district at the shore on Cooks Bay was visited by the streetcar boats rampant on Lake Minnetonka. Dubbing the neighborhood, Busy Corners.  Due to the railroad passing north, in 1900, the business district moved to where we see it today.

Furthermore, one of the most famous business endeavors to come out of the city of Mound, Minnesota was Tonka Toys.  It served as a major employer and business leader for more than 36 years.
