The city of Farmington, named after Farmington, New York, is one of Dakota County’s oldest communities and was on the map before Minnesota became a state. Irving Todd, a publisher of the Hastings Conserver, recorded these observations in 1863: “Farmington seems to us to be suitably named, being a vast conglomeration of farms and farmhouses. We could not but notice the thrifty look which bespoke the careful husbandman.”
Farmington schools are operated by Independent School District 192 and currently enrolls approximately 6,900 students. School District 192 includes all of the city of Farmington, as well as a portion of Lakeville and several surrounding townships. Total population within the district exceeds 33,000. The student population is more than 7,000 and is expected to be stable and have growth.
