Pluses and minuses of an electric vehicle in Minnesota
I am on my second electric vehicle in Minnesota and here are my findings.
My first vehicle was an E-Tron Audi SUV and current on is an Ioniq 6 sedan by Hyundai.
The pluses on an electric vehicle.
- When you charge at home in off peak time the cost of monthly electricity for 15,000 miles a year is about $40 a month.
- The performance is smooth, quiet, and very quick. With the heavy battery you have excellent handling because of the low center of gravity.
- You are heavier than most cars on the road and it gives you strength when you get into an accident.
- Electric cars tend to have more innovative electrics and more modern interiors.
- Helping the environment with no gas emissions.
The minuses of an electric vehicle.
- The range…limited to 225 – 275 miles for most cars. As the result you can suffer from range anxiety because charging stations are not as plentiful as gas stations…not even close. Also, most charging stations are not fast charging so the wait can be hours to charge.
- Winter will be a deal breaker for people. The cold temperatures are not kind to batteries, and you can expect the range to decrease about 35 percent in our cold temperatures. So, your range on an average electric vehicle will hover around 180 miles in the frigid winter months. I have found ways to work around this, but it is not convenient.
- Fast charging stations are not cheap if you are not home to charge. You can expect to pay similar costs per mile to gasoline.
- The cost of putting in a 220 50-amp charger in your garage can be as cheap $300 and as expensive as $2,000 depending on location of electric panel and if you need to wire through a finished basement.
So much to think about when buying an electric vehicle.
