The city of Minnetonka – eminnetonka.com – is a suburb in Hennepin County in the State of Minnesota and located eight miles west of Minneapolis. Minneapolis is one of the Twin Cities – other being Saint Paul. The population is over 51,000. The name comes from the Dakota Sioux mni tanka, meaning “great water”. The city is the home of Cargill which is the country’s largest privately owned company and also UnitedHealth Group which is the state’s largest publicly owned company. In addition Minnetonka is the home of the headquarters for the Carlson Companies, Rosemount Engineering, Medica Health, Starkey Hearing Technologies, St. Jude Medical, Headquarters for SuperValu and MTS.

 

Public schools

The city of Minnetonka is covered by three highly rated independent school districts. The Hopkins School District, which encompasses the central and eastern part of Minnetonka; the Minnetonka School District, in the western part of city north of Lake Minnetonka; and the Wayzata School District, which covers an area along the southern boundary of the city.

Minnetonka is located near Lake Minnetonka which is almost 15,000 acres in size and offers wonderful recreation and beauty.

 

Minnetonka has 42 parks and a vast trail system fo approximately 81 miles. Minnetonka voters recently approved a $15 million bond referendum to renew Minnetonka’s parks and preserve open space.

 

Many fine restaurants can be found in Minnetonka and an abundance of shopping. A popular destination for shopping, dining and entertainment is the Ridgedale Center – www.ridgedalecenter.com –  (also known as Ridgedale). It includes over a million square feet and contains about 140 retail tenants.
